The Spurs select small forward Marcus Williams in the 2nd round

Blogged under The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Big Spurs News, Front Page by alleyoop on Saturday 30 June 2007 at 7:31 am

Marcus Williams is an offensive small forward so it will be interesting to see how he fits in with the Spurs.  He’s stands at 6′7″, 205 pounds and he played his college ball at Arizona so he played against good competition in college and he was effective.  Williams played in 63 games for Arizona and he averaged 14.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.7 blocked shots per game.  Williams shot 47.5% from the floor, 35.6% from three point range and 71% from the free throw line.

The San Antonio Spurs select Tiago Splitter in the 1st round

Blogged under The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Big Spurs News, Front Page by alleyoop on Saturday 30 June 2007 at 7:25 am

The Spurs have selected power forward Tiago Splitter in the 1st round of the NBA Draft.  Splitter is from Brazil which should be no surprise as the Spurs will go anywhere to find good basketball players and it’s paid off for them big time in the past.  Splitter is a 6′11″, 232 pound bruiser who excels on the defensive side of the basketball court so he should fit right in on the Spurs.  Splitter has played in 238 games in Brazil and he has averaged 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.9 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.  Splitter shot 59.2% from the floor (mostly putbacks and dunks), 31.4% from three point range and 57.8% from the free throw line.  Look for the Spurs to bring him along slowly.

The San Antonio Spurs will be in good shape defending their title in 2007

The San Antonio Spurs head into tonight’s draft with 3 picks and 3 free agents.  The free agents are Fabricio Oberto, Matt Bonner and Jacque Vaughn.  It’s possible that the Spurs could let all three walk and get their replacements in the draft later tonight.  The Spurs own the #28, #50 and #60 pick in the draft and will likely take the best athletes on the board but none of them will likely get much playing time as most of the Spurs championship team will dominate the playing time.

Fabricio Oberto has declined his player option with the Spurs and will become a free agent

Blogged under Bloglockers, Big Spurs News, Front Page by alleyoop on Monday 25 June 2007 at 5:06 pm

Fabricio Oberto has declined his player option for next season and he will become a restricted free agent.  It will be interesting to see what kind of offers Oberto gets as he played really well in the playoffs for the Spurs.  The Spurs should try to retain him as long as no one goes overboard and gives him a big contract.  Oberto played in 79 games (33 starts) last season for the Spurs and he averaged 17.3 minutes, 4.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game.  He shot an outstanding 56.2% from the floor but he will need to work on his free throw shooting as he only hit 64.7% from there.

Oberto improved a lot in his second season in the NBA as he improved his career numbers.  Oberto has played in 138 (33 starts) NBA games and he’s averaged 13.4 minutes, 3.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists.  Oberto has hit 54% from the floor and 61.5% from the free throw line.

The Spurs won their 4th NBA Title in 9 years last night by playing stellar defense.  The Spurs suffocated the Cavs offense and held them to 38.1% shooting from the floor.  Manu Ginobili led the way for the Spurs with 27 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Tony Parker won the MVP for the NBA Finals with another great effort as he scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.  Tim Duncan had an awful shooting night (4 of 15 from the floor and 4 of 10 from the free throw line) and he finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots.  Fabricio Oberto made some big plays in the 4th quarter and finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds.  The Spurs are NBA CHAMPIONS by defeating the Cavs 4 games to none.
